UMU (Mayfair)

 UMU (Mayfair)Category: haute cuisine

An ordinary Monday evening, I was going out to meet A. who I hadn’t seen for over a year, and ended up in Umu. Umu, meaning “born of nature” is a high-end restaurant which specialises in the cuisine of Kyoto and is next to the 2 Nobus the only Michelin starred Japanese in London. Very good! I liked the way my Monday evening was developing..!

ESARN KHEAW (Shepherd’s Bush)

ESARN KHEAW (Shepherds Bush)Category: Le Budget

Correct me if I am wrong, but to my knowledge the Shepherd’s Bush area is not exactly packed with exciting restaurants. So where eat, when you go to a gig at Bush Hall or the Shepherd’s Bush Empire or see a play at the Bush Theatre? Thank god there is Easrn Kheaw, a small neighborhood Thai restaurant located just next to Bush Hall specializing in cuisine from North-Eastern Thailand.

MEZA (Soho)

Category: Brasserie MEZA (Soho)

Lovely M took N and me out for dinner. I had a very nice evening but this was due to the company and certainly not due to food or venue. Maybe I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, but I do have a couple of things to say about Meza…

Meza shares the same entrance with Cuban restaurant and bar Floridita and belongs – like Floridita – to the D&D restaurant group. My experience with food and service at Floridita has not been great so I had some concerns about Meza – which were unfortunately fully appropriate.

ZUCCA (Bermondsey) (2)

Zucca, Zucca, what am I going to do with you? After my first, not very successful visit (see Zucca (1) ) I returned not long afterwards because somehow the place left me intrigued (and it’s on the way between home and work which might have influenced my decision too…). And still I don’t know what to think as there are many things I really like about Zucca but also some things I absolutely don’t.

CAY TRE (Hoxton)

Category: Bistro CAY TRE (Hoxton)

After an unsatisfactory visit a couple of years ago I had never been back to Cay Tre. Cay Tre in Old Street and Viet Grill in Kingsland Road have the same owners and I also was not particularly impressed by Viet Grill. But everyone deserves a second chance and I have to say – I was pleasantly surprised and so was my favourite Vietnamese dinner companion N. Apparently the lotus plant symbolizes purity and perfection in Vietnamese culture, a description that would also apply for the lotus stem salad (gỏi ngó sen) (6.5£) at Cay Tre. It reminded me of my all-time favourite, Vietnamese papaya salad, but the lotus stems added another, very pleasant, crunchy dimension to it. It was absolutely delicious, tasting of fresh herbs and a hint of chili and perfectly cooked prawns.

YALLA YALLA (Soho)

Category: Le Budget YALLA YALLA (Soho)

Thanks to volcanic ash my dear friend T was stuck in London and we met up for dinner in Soho on Sunday night. Early night I have to say as I was suffering from a bad hangover which needed some good food for cure. By chance we walked past Yalla Yalla, tucked away in a little side street surrounded by sex shops, and decided to try it. “Beirut street food” we thought sounded certainly intriguing. It is a tiny place with not more than 10 tables and an impressive take away counter heaving with delicious looking food.

JAK’S (CHELSEA)

Category: Bistro JAKS (CHELSEA)

I have to say I like this place. Jak’s is a deli/cafe which – despite of being in the middle of Chelsea, in walking distance from Harrods and surrounded by a plethora of pretentious bars and overpriced restaurant – has managed to maintain its character. We wanted to try Jak’s for a long time, but usually on weekends for brunch it’s absolutely packed and I am not a big fan of queues when I’m hungry, but finally we made it on a Friday evening.

NAHM (Belgravia)

 NAHM (Belgravia)

Category: Haute Cuisine

RS took me to Nahm for my birthday. Very well chosen I have to say as I love Thai food and David Thompson’s Nahm is the first Thai restaurant in Europe to have received a Michelin star. Nahm is located at the Hakin Hotel in Belgravia well hidden away in a little residential side street. The restaurant is comfortably small and it must be one of the only Thai restaurants without Asian décor, which is not necessarily a bad thing… I found the atmosphere to be quite neutral (like hotel restaurants often tend to be) and the other guests all looked like bankers (you need good bonuses to afford dining there).

ZUCCA (Bermondsey) (1)

ZUCCA (Bermondsey) (1)please also read my more recent blog about Zucca

Category: Bistro

There is a new place Bermondsey Street which opened about two weeks ago. It’s called “Zucca” (Italian for pumpkin) and it offers “modern Italian cuisine”. Bermondsey Street, regarded by some as one of the loveliest and liveliest neighborhood streets in London, is buzzing with restaurants and bars. Zucca is a much welcomed addition to the culinary scene as so far, the choice of Italian restaurants in this area has been limited. Zucca is stylish with white tables and chairs and an open kitchen. The menu is pleasantly small: 8 starters and 8 main courses – 2 pasta, 3 meat and 3 fish dishes. Prices are fair –3-4.5£ for a starter and around 13£ pounds for a main.

MIEN TAY (Shoreditch)

 MIEN TAY (Shoreditch)

Another, Vietnamese restaurant on Kingsland Road, which I tried with N – best friend and lover of Vietnamese food since we went to Vietnam together – after having read some good reviews about it. We went there for a healthy Sunday lunch.

O my god this place is funny! The owners seem to try halfheartedly to rebuild some kind of tropical flora, which they attempt by trapping a wide variety of poor plastic flowers and artificial grass inside their glass tables.
