| May 31st,2010 Category:Budget Bento Cafe is one of my favourite cheap little Japanese places in London. I just went there again recently for a sushi fix with my lovely girlfriends N. and C. Even though it was in the middle of the afternoon it was busy –it usually is. It is just off the buzz of Camden Market (which is usually a relief),and I have the suspicion that most people there are returning customers. May 29th,2010 Category: Bistro This was a recommendation made independently by two Italian friends,so I would have actually expected more from this casual Italian restaurant/ pizzeria. Santa Lucia is part of the “Made in Italy Group” that has several branches all over London. We dined at another branch on King’s Road (Made in Italy) some time ago and were not that happy,as the pasta was overcooked and the service not really up to scratch. But after the strong recommendations that this is the best Italian in London we decided to try Santa Lucia anyway. May 28th,2010 Category: Le Budget I really like SoBo. It is a pleasant little neighborhood cafe which has ever-changing art installations (at the moment they have colourful bikes on the wall,not quite my cup of tea but nevertheless kind of cool) and which is frequented by an interesting crowd –I am always surprised to see that people like this do actually live in my area… May 27th,2010 Category: Bistro Vietnamese and Japanese fusion….? No it’s not,it’s awful! N and I,after a not very successful shopping afternoon (I wonder who actually looks good in harem pants..),had booked a table at Nuocmam in Great Portland Street close to Oxford Circus. It was 50% off on Taste London and it claimed to serve Vietnamese cuisine. When we arrived there we started to feel a bit dubious about the whole idea,as the sign at the door indicated that it was a “karaoke restaurant”. Scary! May 24th,2010 Category: Brasserie
May 22nd,2010 Category: Bistro Bad bad experience,I am still annoyed thinking about my breakfast at Delfina which felt like being on a hidden camera TV show. Let me set the scene: It was Monday morning,around 8:30 ,not an unusual time to have breakfast. The restaurant was basically empty and remained empty (which in hindsight doesn’t surprise). Only a couple of people stopped for a take away coffee. The waitress:chatty,friendly,American,completely useless. May 22nd,2010 Category: Le Budget Have a mentioned that I love Vietnamese? So it’s a very good thing for me to have a decent and cheap Vietnamese Cafe in the neighborhood. I am talking about Caphe House in Bermondsey Street,which is a small and relaxed place offering Vietnamese baguette (Banh Mi),fresh spring roles,Pho and several rice and noodle dishes among others. And –as the name promises –Vietnamese coffee. We went there for lunch and were pleasantly surprised: May 19th,2010 Category: Bistro Sometimes not even a 50% off deal (Toptable) makes a restaurant worth going to. Alfie’s,a hotel restaurant on Bermondsey Square,is one of these unfortunate places. It didn’t have very good reviews admittedly,but we decided to give it a chance anyway,as the hotel looks really classy from the outside and so does the restaurant. Also the inside is quite nice –it’s a rather stylish,maybe not too comfortable but nicely done with an open kitchen. May 18th,2010 Category:Bistro What a fun place! And the food is good too. I took my mum there who came to visit me from the culinary wastelands of Austria and I had the intention to provide her with some unique and special food experiences. What better place to choose than Abeno Too? May 11th,2010 Category: Le Budget I fell in love with Song Que on my first visit over 4 years ago and have been returning frequently ever since. Especially after having been to Vietnam myself I could appreciate the flavour and authenticity of their dishes even more. For me,eating at Song Que is always a treat. It doesn’t matter that the atmosphere is canteen-like,the waiters are impolite and too many people are packed into too little space because I am there for the food. And the food is delicious and very cheap. |
