SUCHARD (London Bridge)SUCHARD (London Bridge)

Category: Le Budget

Suchard does not impress from the outside but hidden behind a not very inviting facade is –in my opinion –one of the most authentic Thai places in London.

Everyone who has been to Thailand will probably agree with me that you find the best food there in the most basic places. Suchard serves this kind of food. No fuss or pretense, big portions and deliciously Thai. I go there every couple of months and I have rarely been disappointed.

On my last visit I had of course their very competitively priced and utterly delicious som tum (papaya salad) (4.50). Tangy and fresh green papaya interspersed with runner beans and tomatoes, topped with peanuts and a generous amount of chilli.

We then tried the Pla Choo Chee (9.50) –crispy whole trout fillet with red curry sauce. The fish was moist and delicious and went very well with the creamy red curry coconut sauce and fresh coriander leaves on top.

The weeping tiger (9.50) consisted of unfortunately overdone and dry sirloin steak. However this disappointment was contrasted by the lovely sauce it came with:it had the distinct taste of BBQ sauce while somehow still tasting Asian and spicy;very interesting combination of flavours I haven’t come across yet.

I was intrigued by the Thai honey baby chicken (8.50). Like the fish the chicken was perfectly cooked, moist and tender. I assume it had been marinated in some kind of honey dressing because you could pick up the sweet flavour in the meat. lovely and highly recommended!

I can also recommend their curries, the gaprow and the tamarind prawns among others. Avoid the starter platters unless you like everything fried and want to prematurely die of heart disease.

Even though Suchard has increased their prices some time ago they are still very cheap for what they offer, the rice is included and the tip is not! Be aware though that they don’t compromise on spiciness. 3 stars means 3 stars and even I who bravely eats the most spicy dishes and actually enjoys them, nearly passed out once eating their gaprow.

  • Food: 7.5/10
  • Ambiance: 6/10
  • Service: 7/10 (tip NOT included)
  • Value for money:8.5/10
  • Chances of returning: 100%
  • Verdict: authentic, delicious and cheap Thai
