OSAKA (Japan) –Kyoshi Sushi

Kyoshi Sushi must be the smallest place I have ever eaten at but also the most charming and cute one. It is too small to be even called a restaurant actually. We found it on Chowhound and it was apparently featured on the Antony Bourdain’s No Reservation programme on US TV (which I have to be honest have not heard of before). And you can look at it here (starts at 1:00 min)

I will try to explain the place:Imagine a couple of rather chubby elderly Japanese who have been making sushi for over 40 years:the guy cooks, the lady washes up and cleans, you wonder how they do either of this in this rather restricted space (we are talking about approximately one square metre) –also you don’t know how they ever get out of there as they are trapped by the surrounding bar with maybe 8-10 seats and that’s it. There are three different ‘doors’on either of the three sides to get to your seats because the place is so small that you can’t get from the one side to the other inside.

We had the most amazing sushi there. The chef speaks hardly any English,so in the end he just prepared what he thought we would like. Some of the fish and seafood we knew, others we had never seen before and we were absolutely oblivious to what we were eating. And boy,was this good!

(I apologize for the quality of the pictures,I drank A LOT of Asahi and seemed to have lost my focus during the course of the evening, this guy was there as well and his pictures are substantially better I have to admit)

From Osaka

Tuna and Anago (salt water eel)

From Osaka

Prawn and Uni (sea urchin eggs)

From Osaka

Saba (mackerel) and I think this looks like an octopus

From Osaka

Taiharagai (some clam type) and caviar.

From Osaka

What the hell could this be? I have no idea. Any suggestions? (by the way –It tasted much better than it looks).

Anyway,if you should ever get to Osaka you MUST GO THERE!
