Halloween Afternoon Tea @Met Bar (Mayfair)

Category: Brasserie (£££)

In general,I am not a big fan of afternoon tea. It is kind of fun once a year or so but otherwise I just prefer lunches and dinners and having afternoon tea means you can’t have a proper one of either. And somehow it just never tastes very good. So when I was invited by the lovely Diana@MassayTravel to the ‘Day of the Dead’de-light afternoon tea at the Met Bar adjacent to the Metropolitan Hotel in Mayfair I was skeptical to say the very least. I was expecting soggy sandwiches (I don’t know how you feel about it but I have never quite understood the attraction of cucumber sandwiches),greasy scones and overly sweet and buttery cakes.

Hungry in New York –Budget to Mid-Range

We did not always dine in high class (and high price) establishments but also sampled some excellent and some not so excellent budget and medium-priced options in NYC. Here I will review The Green Table in Chelsea (green light),Omai in Chelsea (yellow light),Gennaro in the Upper East Side (green light),Broken English in Brooklyn (red light) and The Burger Joint in Midtown West (green light).

Hungry in New York –The Pricey

This was my first time in New York and I absolutely loved it! Me being a country bumpkin I was particularly impressed about how high the buildings there were and how cheap the jeans…As you can imagine,I needed a lot of food to fill up on all the calories I burnt running through the city exploring the hidden corners of Manhattan and Brooklyn and I found some great restaurants most of which were recommend to me by fellow foodies.

TOKYO DINER (Chinatown)

Category:Le Budget (£)

Ironically in the middle of Chinatown there is Tokyo Diner,a cheap but decent Japanese restaurant. Even though the owner appears to be English (if you agree with me that Richard Hills does not sound terribly Japanese) the place has a distinct Japanese atmosphere to it. I have just been to Japan couple of months ago and Tokyo Diner feels very much like one of the Izakayas I went to in Kobe. I am talking not only about the furnishing and (as far as I can judge it) Japanese waiters but also the fact that, just like in Japan, tips are not taken, that you pay on the counter when you leave and that green tea (I think it was Hojicha) is served free of charge.

FRIDAY FOOD CLUB (supper club –Blackheath)

Category: Brasserie

BYO,36 pounds (depends on menu)

The Friday Food Club is fantastic. You have to imagine it like one of these posh dinner parties that you thought you would be invited to all the time when you are grown up and (at least in my case) never actually seem to be taking place (or seem to be taking place without me).

BENARES (Mayfair)

Category: Haute Cuisine (££££)

I have so far been a bit disappointed with Asian restaurants in London that have been awarded a Michelin star,as I really did not particularly like Nahm, thought Umu was overrated and Nobu did not impress me very much either. Benares was the first Michelin starred Indian I tried and I was not sure what to expect as this restaurant seems to divide food critics, food bloggers and the public likewise.

THE UNDERGROUND RESTAURANT (Supper Club-Kilburn)THE UNDERGROUND RESTAURANT (Supper Club-Kilburn)

Category: Brasserie
40 pounds/head,BYO

The Underground Restaurant hosted by the food blogger MsMarmiteLover (10/10 for the name!) was one of the first supper clubs I came across in various media like the guardian and bbc. She is the supper club pioneer in London and since she has started to cook for strangers in her own house over two years ago, many more followed her example (and this not always with good results..). It was not the first supper club I visited but has always been high up on my list and finally I made it there intrigued to find out if MsMarmiteLover’s cooking holds what her media presence promises (her anteroom is plastered with newspaper articles about her and her supper club).  She cooks her (mostly vegetarian) food in an old-fashioned aga and each of her menus is individual. Thumbs up for this amount of creativity!
The Underground Restaurant is located in North London, close to Kilburn tube station. Even though MsMarmiteLover usually hosts more people,on this particular evening we were only around 15. The atmosphere was homely and we were served by a couple of young, charming and friendly waiters (one later turned out to be the daughter of the house).

I have to admit that I forgot my camera and my attempts to take pictures with my (old crappy)  phone were not very successful, but luckily I got  MsMarmiteLover’s permission to show her photos of the food (taken from her website) to give you an idea about the dishes.
