I have to admit that I forgot my camera and my attempts to take pictures with my (old crappy) phone were not very successful, but luckily I got MsMarmiteLover’s permission to show her photos of the food (taken from her website) to give you an idea about the dishes.
Upon arrival we all received a complimentary glass of Elderberry cordial cocktail –the cava with red home-made elderberry juice was much too sweet for me,but this is my personal taste, I just prefer my sparkling wine straight. While sipping our drink we got chatting to the other people there (again a very interesting mixture of people of different ages and different backgrounds) and then the meal kicked of with Corn and cobnut salad. I don’t think I have ever eaten cobnuts before. They are a type of hazelnut and basically taste like fresh hazelnuts –interesting and very nice. The salad was tasty and was served with lovely and fresh self-made baguette.
I was a bit unlucky for the main,as it mainly consisted of peppers:peppers are –together with pineapple and celeriac –leaders of the Food Ute Dislikes List. MsMarmiteLover prepared Chile en nogada using a mix of fresh poblanos,Joe-E Parkers and Corno di toro peppers (unfortunately for me peppers are peppers
). Chile en nogada is a Mexican national dish usually prepared for the Mexican Independce Day. It features the colour of the mexican flag:a stuffed (green) chile covered in creamy walnut sauce (white) and sprinkled with pomegranate seeds and parsley (red and green). As I said,I am not terribly keen on the peppers but I loved the walnut sauce with a hint of cinnamon. I have never tasted anything like this before and I thought it was absolutely delicious. I learned that making this sauce takes a huge amount of time as you have to soak the walnuts in water first and then peel them!
Another highlight of the meal was the Selection of French and Italian Cheeses which were served with home-made Ryvita and real brown bread (the Austrian in me was very happy). Our favourite was the white truffle ‘Ricetto al Tartufo’but in the end all of the 7 or 8 cheeses were of outstanding quality and absolutely delicious. I ended up eating far too much! I had to make some more space for the dessert however:the Indian harvest festival rice pudding. Usually I’m not so keen on rice pudding but I really liked this one with the distinct taste of cardamon and cinnamon and a lovely crust on top. Opinions on the rice pudding were divided though:RS for example who accompanied me there did not like it at all... (which was good so I could have his as well Overall I had a lovely evening at MsMarmiteLover’s house. She is an excellent host and I thought the atmosphere was really nice and cozy. Compared to other supper clubs I have been to I thought the food was maybe less ‘sophisticated’but tasted more like homely home-cooked food with fresh ingredients, and a lot of love and attention to detail. And after all the fancy restaurants this might be exactly what you need!
I should mention also that we were ‘allowed’to try the new Marmite Chocolate (with the very fitting name ‘Very Peculiar‘). Sorry,MsMarmiteLover, but it was disgusting…
