We went to see the hilarious comic opera HMS Pinafore at the King’s Head Theatre in Upper Street Islington (highly recommended!) after which we felt like some cheap and no fuss Japanese. We ended up at Tenshi. I had eaten lunch there once before a while ago and thought it was ok albeit not terribly special. This first impression was confirmed on my second visit.
We ordered some pretty standard dishes and the overall execution was rather mediocre. The Agedashi Tofu was somehow tasteless and the skin was too thick. The miso soup and the edamame beans were good although I doubt that there is very much you can do wrong with those dishes…
Then we tried a few of the sushi rolls. Disappointing were he prawn tempura and avocado maki which turned out to be insipid. One had to drown them in soy sauce and wasabi to add some kind of (very salty) dimension to the dish. The seared tuna inside out role were rather nice and the eel nigri acceptable but nothing was really above average.
Tenshi is cheap and not a bad place if you are after a quick bite. I have to agree however with An American in London who prefers the similarly priced SaSa Sushi, also in Angel.
- Food: 4/10
- Service: 7/10
- Ambiance: 6/10
- Value for money: 6/10
- Chances of returning: 4%
- Verdict: Rather mediocre and there are better options when after cheap Japanese.

I like it too….
Sorry to hear that you had a less than pleasant experience at Tenshi. I thought that Sasa Sushi just south along St John Street is better but Tenshi had the advantage of having a better location.
@London Chow – agree, Sasa Sushi is just a bit out of the way, but probably worth the walk…
