BOBA JAM – my first Bubble Tea

There is this food blog that I’ve recently started reading and this food blog recently had a post about Bubble Tea and a new place that does Bubble Tea in Soho. I was intrigued – I had no idea what bubble tea was and had obviously never tried it either.

ANTEPLILER (Islington)

Category: Bistro (££)yellow traffic5 150x150 ANTEPLILER (Islington)

There is a plethora of Turkish restaurants on Upper Street in Islington and the food can be a bit hit and miss. The food at Antepliler clearly fell into the former category. We went there for a quick Sunday lunch before going to the London Art Fair at the Business Design Centre after reading the very positive review on Time Out.

YORK & ALBANY (Camden)

Set menu: 18 pounds for 2 courses, 21 pounds for 3 courses

York & Albany was a very pleasant surprise. You walk up Parkway from Camden Tube Station and it seems endless in wind and cold. You think you must have missed it, when you suddenly there it is: A Gordon Ramsey restaurant in the middle of nowhere (at least it seemed so to me, correct me when it’s a really cool area after all) at the corner of Regent’s Park  which is unpretentious and the food is really really good.

L’ATELIER DES CHEFS – Cooking Class

L’Atelier des Chefs, Cook and Dine (90 min) - 54 pounds

Something seminal happened. I took my second cooking class! And I did this without major disaster (burning myself or others, blood bath, lost extremities…). I felt this was quite an achievement. I have to say that this was actually a present for Stu, so it was not that I actively WANTED to take a cooking class. But it was actually fun (and I learned how to cut ingredients into very small pieces, a hard lesson for someone as impatient as me).

GAUTHIER SOHO (Soho)

Category: Brasserie (£££)green traffic5 150x150 GAUTHIER SOHO (Soho)

Gauthier Soho is the restaurant where I went to celebrate in style the happy occasion of me  having finally finished my PhD. At the same time, Gauthier Soho probably celebrated that it just got awarded its first Michelin star. Not that it is the owner’s first – Alexis Gauthier has already achieved this award as chef at his former work place Rousillon. But I think, basically, Alexis and me were both happy!

BAOZI INN (Chinatown)

Category: Le Budget (£)green traffic5 150x150 BAOZI INN (Chinatown)

I really love the simple Sichuan street food served at Baozi Inn and the current visit was no exception. We are not talking culinary sophistication here but I think it’s a fantastic place for a quick and exceptional lunch and you are in and out in less than 30 minutes. Exhausted, frustrated and frozen to the bone after some unsuccessful shopping I was revived by the house specialty Sichuan noodle soup (6.50). For me personally the pork was slightly too fatty but the meat was nevertheless very tasty. The soup tasted delicious and had a good kick to it without making me scream for water in agony.

BRAWN (Bethnal Green)

Category: Bistro (££)yellow traffic5 150x150 BRAWN (Bethnal Green)

I have to start with some food-independent whining. I have spent the last 2 weeks studying (ergo reduced posting frequency) and should still be studying for my viva on Monday but if someone mentions the word immunology to me ever again or asks me anything about gamma-delta T cells or psoriasis, I might have to kill him/her. (This in fact doesn’t bode well for my examiners.) So please keep your fingers crossed for me on Monday!

VIETNAMESE COOKING CLASS @F&L

I have only one New Year’s resolution for 2011 which is to cook more. And what would be a better start for this ambitious project than to attend a couple of cooking classes.

The choice of what cooking class to attend first was easy: Uyen who is hosting my favourite supper club Fernandez & Leluu VIETNAMESE COOKING CLASS @F&L  in Hackney (now Leluu’s Supperclub) has recently started to teach Vietnamese cooking in her kitchen. As Vietnamese is one of my favourite cuisines and I have experienced many times at her supper club that Uyen cooks exquisitely, I immediately booked myself a place.

MIEN TAY (Battersea)

Category: Le Budget yellow traffic31 150x150 MIEN TAY (Battersea)(£)

I hardly ever get over to Battersea. The only reason for me to venture out into this tube-less part of town is the Battersea Arts Centre – an utterly great and creative theatre well worth the journey. If you have the chance to see ‘The Children and Animals took to the Streets‘ by 1927, do it! This was one of the best and most entertaining shows I have seen in the past year. Additionally, I really like the bar at the BAC, I just wish it was closer to where I live, I would hang out there every day…

KYOTO SUSHI (Soho)

Category: Le Budget green traffic5 150x150 KYOTO SUSHI (Soho)(£)

It is surprising how difficult it is to find inexpensive and decent Japanese in Soho. Thank god for Kyoto Sushi and the fact that I finally stumbled upon it on 1st of January, when basically everything else was closed. For this reason we bravely remained in the queue (usually I am just much too impatient to wait for food anywhere…). While queuing I already suspected that we might have made the right decision: about 90% of the customers appeared to be Japanese and if they don’t know where to get good sushi…
