There is a plethora of Turkish restaurants on Upper Street in Islington and the food can be a bit hit and miss. The food at Antepliler clearly fell into the former category. We went there for a quick Sunday lunch before going to the London Art Fair at the Business Design Centre after reading the very positive review on Time Out.
We were not disappointed, at least not by the food. The service however, even though friendly, was incredibly slow and inefficient. For example, we ordered a bottle of water at one waiter, he says he will get us another waiter, we order the bottle again at the different waiter, when it still doesn’t arrive (we are now already finished with the food) we find a third waiter and so on… and so on… (I should mention that there were only 2 tables occupied and twice as many waiters present than customers).
After a weekend of unhealthy eating and drinking we felt very vegetarian and therefore went for the Vegetarian Meze Platter (9). This was a generous selection of Turkish starters: creamy and moreish hummus, tabouleh with loads of fresh parsley and lemon just the way I like it, rather mediocre halloumi , lovely and smooth falafel, borek with feta and not at all greasy, refreshing yogurt with garlic and cucumber and a lot more that I couldn’t quite identify – most of it was very good.
I loved the salad with walnut and pomegranate (4.5), such an unusual but all the more dainty combination. The only small criticism maybe were the tomatoes that tasted like pale, insipid winter tomatoes, so I think this salad must be even better when we finally going to get tomatoes with taste again in London.
Overall Antepliler is an excellent and safe choice for a quick bite to eat when you are in the area. I haven’t tried the main courses there yet but shall do on my next visit.
