PENARTH – Spring and Welsh Seaside Town

Wales is a very pretty part of the world – especially the coast. I love walking along the sea, with sheep on the one side and steep cliffs on the other and particularly now, with the weather getting better and spring is on the doorstep, I am really enjoying this outdoor part of my life in Wales .

MISKIN MANOR – a Welsh Country House Hotel

I have been posted to South Wales recently and have been living in a town with a name containing a lot of Llllls, that I couldn’t pronounce if my life depended on it, for a couple of weeks now. So you might read some posts on restaurants, hotels and more from outside the capital for the upcoming months before I shall return to my beloved London.

MY DINING ROOM (Fulham)

If I don’t have time to look at blogs for restaurant recommendations, I tend to use Time Out for restaurant references. Time Out is about right most of the time and it is rare that I completely disagree with their review, but one of this rare occasions happened last weekend at My Dining Room in Fulham. I went there on Time Out’s recommendation whose reviewer experienced this restaurant as ‘friendly service and halfway house between relaxed pub and fancy restaurant: think gastropub turned chichi.’ and awarded 4 out of 5 stars.

JAMIE OLIVER SUPPERCLUB – raising money for charity

That the combination of supper clubs and raising money for charity works, has been shown on several occasions, for example at Fernandez & Leluu and The Friday Food Club (beautifully summarized by The London Foodie HERE).

So it was only a question of time until also commercially successful chefs jump on the supper club bandwagon.  I was lucky enough to participate in the new Jamie Oliver Supper Club which is now held roughly monthly to raise money for the Jamie Oliver Foundation.

VINOTECA SEYMOUR PLACE (Marylebone)

I have to start by saying that I absolutely love the original Vinoteca in Farringdon (you can read my laudatory review here), so I was more than intrigued when its sister restaurant opened on Seymour Place in Marylebone about 6 months ago. In short – my expectations on my first visit to  Vinoteca Seymour Place were high and were not fully met, at least not food-wise.

HIBA (London Bridge)

Category: Bistro (£) green traffic5 150x150 HIBA (London Bridge)

Meze, if done well, are among my favourite foods for an uncomplicated girls’ night out. Just order a few plates to share with some pita bread and a bottle of wine and chat the night away, and this usually without breaking the bank.

 HIBA (London Bridge)

The Lebanese restaurant Hiba about 5 minutes walk from London Bridge down Borough High Street doesn’t look like much from the outside. Sharing a common front with Costa Coffee, which in my opinion does really crap coffee and I avoid like the plague, one might think it’s just some basic take away. You couldn’t be more wrong.

BEATROOT CAFE (Soho)

Category: Budget (£)yellow traffic5 150x150 BEATROOT CAFE (Soho)

Beatroot Cafe in Berwick Street is almost something like a Soho institution. It has been around since 1997 which is a long period considering the sometimes fast pace of change in the London restaurant scene.

 BEATROOT CAFE (Soho)

I have never tried it though as it just never looked terribly inviting to me – the door of the small restaurant is always open and I am a very cold and draft sensitive. When I walked past last time with a grumbling stomach, Eureka!, the door was finally closed! (mind you, it was about 2 degrees and gales, so the door should be closed).

THE PERSEVERANCE (Bloomsbury)

Category: Bistro (££) red traffic 150x150 THE PERSEVERANCE (Bloomsbury)

A not so honorary mention for Perseverance, an independent pub in Bloomsbury, which served me the possibly worst burger I have ever eaten in the UK.

My meal didn’t start off well when I had to wait 25 minutes longer for the food than my 5 lunch companions. When my Cheeseburger (8.50) finally arrived, I wished it rather hadn’t. The meat managed it to be completely overcooked and at the same time have a weird mushy consistency. I think they must have put potatoes or bread in the burger mixture, whatever it was, it tasted foul.

TORTILLA (Islington)

Recently I was invited to check out the Mexican fast food place Tortilla. Tortilla is a mini chain consisting of 5 branches in London and claims to serve healthy Mexican burritos. Tortilla clearly had no idea who they asked to scrutinize their restaurant as, to be honest, Mexican food is one of my least favourite cuisines. I really struggled when I was in Mexico to find anything I enjoyed eating. Having said this, I love Mexican ceviche, but in general there are just too many beans and cornmeal-based dishes and after a few days everything just started tasting the same. As far I have been successfully ignoring the current food trend of Mexican restaurants popping up all over London…

JEN CAFE (Chinatown)

Category: Le Budget (£) yellow traffic5 150x150 JEN CAFE (Chinatown)

Even though I must have walked past Jen Cafe a million times and was always more than intrigued by the Chinese lady sitting in the window of this small Chinese eatery making dumplings, it needed the heartfelt recommendation of Eat Noodles Love Noodles (read his review of Jen Cafe here) to finally convince me  to give it a try. Entering Jen Cafe on the corner of Chinatown, I felt like I had left London and ended up somewhere in China. Half of the waitresses don’t even speak English.
