Wales is a very pretty part of the world –especially the coast. I love walking along the sea, with sheep on the one side and steep cliffs on the other and particularly now, with the weather getting better and spring is on the doorstep,I am really enjoying this outdoor part of my life in Wales .
It is my favourite time of the year, when you feel the winter is finally coming to an end and the sun has gained a little bit of strength feeling warm on your skin. In London I never felt the awakening of nature quite so distinctly, while here in Wales spring is everywhere. Hiking in Wales, you encounter vast fields of wild garlic and daffodils, and the roadside is framed by delicate lilacs and colourful primroses.
I greeted spring in Penarth,a little seaside town just about 20-30 minutes outside of Cardiff. I can’t tell you much about the town, but the coastal walk there is beautiful.
We found a rather nice place for Sunday lunch in Penarth called The Pier and The Pebble. The food might not have been the best I ever had,but it was decent and with 11 for 2 courses a real deal! They are also on Taste of London,so you could pay half price of this even if you have a Taste London Card…In addition they were very electric car friendly and happily charged the battery of the little blue car for hours for free! (Shame on you Miskin Manor!)
The Goat’s Cheese Tarte was tasted lovely, but the dough was a bit soggy and soft (I suspected it had been re-heated…)
The Brussels pate was nothing to write home about, but was quite enjoyable, particularly as it was served with hot toast. Packed butter portions is a bad idea though. Looks crap and produces unnecessary mess.
The Seabass with Lemon Sauce was maybe a bit on the dry side but overall quite tasty. I would have been very happy with the Steak burger if it hadn’t been cooked to death. It was very far away from my requested medium rare…But again, the taste was good.
The staff was exceptionally friendly and I quite enjoyed the atmosphere with the sea being so close. You can also sit outside, but for this it was still a bit too cold. I should mention also that you can rent rooms there, for about 80 pounds a night with sea view and breakfast included. An idea for a spring weekend out of town?
- Food:5/10
- Ambiance:6/10
- Service:8/10
- Value for money: 7/10
- Chances of returning: whenever I’m in Penarth I shall return
- Verdict: not exactly Haute Cuisine but a good choice for rural Wales.
