THE CORNISH GRILL (Pop up in Clapham)

Category: Bistro (££)

Matt Chatfield is delivering produce from his home county Cornwall to the top restaurants in London such as The Ledbury and Marcus Wareing, apparently he supplies meat and fish to 25 Michelin stars each day. He is the owner of Cornwall in your Kitchen and works together with the Cornish fishmonger with major focus on sustainability,Fish for Thought.

Matt decided that he wants to make his high quality ingredients accessible to more people and has founded The Cornish Grill,a pop up restaurant at the Manor House Pub in Clapham, which is open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer. At this decidedly laid back neighbourhood pub he sells his fish and meat to ‘BBQ prices’.  The menu changing every weekend (when I went, the menu was Spanish-influenced) and he has young chefs (often sous chefs from London’s finest restaurants) prepare the food.

The whole Cornish Grill experience is  pleasantly unprofessional and feels very genuine. These guys are very proud of their food and I loved their passion and dedication.

Their Cornish Beef Burger for 8 pounds must be among the best burgers I have ever had. I went with a group of Americans who do know their burger better than me,and even they were rendered speechless by the quality of the beef. One compared it to ‘slightly seared beef tartar’. It was deliciously greasy, juicy, messy and tasted just great. As we were awaiting 2 enormous Cote de Boeufs we shared the burger between the four of us,but

(on the terrace, they had some kind of blueish lighting as a result the photos of the meat do not look as appetisising as the reality, sorry for that!)

The Salad of Grilled Artichokes with Piquila Peppers and Anchovies (7.50) was a little bit sad in comparison. It was not bad but considering that for only 50 p more we could have had another of these wonderful whoppers,it almost seemed a waste of money. I would suggest to go for meat, meat and only meat when you visit the Cornish Grill. Having said that, their fish must be great too,but I didn’t have a chance to try it at this occasion.

Matt’s pride it their 28m days hung Cote de Boeuf. It is made to share for 2 people for the incredible bargain price of 24 pounds. I don’t think you get beef like this for a similar price anywhere else in London. If this tickles your fancy, you have to order it until Wednesday 8 pm to enjoy it on the following weekend. A group of rugby players celebrated their win next to our table but their jolly celebrations came to a halt while they jealously observed us tucking into magnificent pieces of meat. I bet they wished they had ordered it!

It was one of the occasions where I loved being a carnivore. The beef was very tasty indeed, particularly the more fatty parts closer to the bone. I would however have prefered the beef to be slightly more rare. The beef was served with lovely gravy and beautifully cooked poatoes and portobello mushrooms. The generous portion of lettuce on the side could have done with a bit more seasoning.

If this sounds good to you, here is their current menu. There is almost no excuse not to pop by at this pop up. Just for the food we paid roughly 65 pounds for 4 people and we ate like kings. You shouldn’t let a deal like this go…

  • Food: 7/10
  • Service: very lovely but incredibly unprofessional, sorry Matt ;)
  • Atmosphere:5/10
  • Value for Money: 9/10
  • Chances of Returning: 50%
  • Verdict: For the burger alone a trip to Clapham should be strongly considered!
