Since I “discovered” Korean food roughly a year ago, it has swiftly made its way to the top of Ute’s random food cravings.  I feel much more often like indulging in kimchi jjigae, bibimbap or bulgogi than I fancy Thai, Chinese or even Italian.  There is something about Korean food that is so comforting, warm and invigorating – the ultimate cure for the blues and homesickness.

I have to apologise for my lazy blogging at the moment – the summer effect, changing jobs and a lot of things going on in my life.  I have however been eating, so will update you on recent restaurant experiences in a series of shorter posts.  In the end all you, dear readers, want to know is whether the restaurant is worth going to, right?

Japanese noodles have finally arrived in London.  Apart from the established and highly praised Koya which opened a couple of years ago and serves home-made udon (their walnut miso udon has made it on the top 100 dishes in London list) , two new ramen bars were launched in the last few months.  There is Ittenbari in Brewer Street, which was brought to London by the Japanese owner of a ramen bar in Osaka, and now also Tonkotsu.  Behind Tonkotsu are the guys that are responsible for Tsuru, a small chain of excellent and cheap London sushi bars that also do great chicken katsu.

I am rarely doing invited restaurant reviews any more.  In some way, it makes me feel guilty when I get a free meal and I have to give a devastating review.  Unfortunately there is no way I could have written a positive or even moderate review about Imli, an Indian tapas restaurant in the middle of Soho.

I love ceviche but no, I didn’t like Ceviche.  Ceviche, a recently opened Peruvian restaurant in Soho, is the new darling of the London foodie scene, equally loved by food bloggers and food critics.  Peruvian cuisine is predicted to be the new food trend of 2012 (as suggested in Huffington Post and The Telegraph) and apart from Ceviche, 2 more Peruvian restaurants are to open in London in the coming months.

I had Peruvian food only at a few occasions and enjoyed it a lot, so I was excited to meet my friend Uyen at Ceviche for a girly lunch.

La Bodega Negra brought to London by the New York restaurateur, “cultural engineer” and nightclub owner Serge Becker is certainly a welcome addition to London’s food and drinks scene and has taken the London foodie world by storm.  We all like places that are relaxed, reasonably priced and serve a mean margarita, right?

London is in dire need of good neighbourhood Italians.  Unfortunately the newly opened Italian trattoria Mele e Pere in Soho is not going to change that.

My recent lunch at Mele e Pere was largely mediocre.  I chose dishes from the lunch and pre-theatre menu, which with 12.50 for 2 courses is a real bargain.   The a la carte menu is substantially more pricey with antipasti from £.50 to £9.50, paste from £7.50 to £10 and mains between £14 and £24.

My dinner at Bistro du Vin has been a largely unpleasant experience and the food could be summarised with the two words “Dry” and “Bland“.  On top of this, the service personnel was truly annoying (such as 3 waiters  asking the same question within the space of 2 minutes and fake friendliness that seemed very insincere) and a waiting time of 45 minutes for the starter of the pre-theatre menu.

Bibimbap is not only the famous Korean national dish, but also the name of a small Korean eatery in the midst of Soho.  It is one of the places that, once discovered, you will keep coming back to for your quick, cheap, tasty and filling Korean fix.
