THE OLIVE TREE –Rip Off in Bath

Category:Haute Cuisine (££££)

Once in a while you come across a restaurant which deserves to be really trashed. The Olive Tree in beautiful Bath is one of them. If with my review I have saved only a couple of people from going there and  spending their hard earned money on this ludicrous and massively overpriced food then I have done my deed.

When I was doing my research on where to eat in Bath,I really struggled to find valuable pieces of information. Are there no food bloggers in Bath? This place would seriously deserve some critical eaters…

Anyway,we ended up at The Olive Tree. When we got the menu we were stunned. These were London prices, but London high end dining:no starter below 10 pounds and the mains up to 31 pounds. If I pay this I expect exceptional food.

Well I got what I wished for,the food was exceptionally bad and pretentious.

Always nice to get complimentary bread,in this case it looked better than it tasted. All three varieties tasted remarkably similar, were over-salted and doughy. This didn’t bode well for things to come but we were not discouraged yet at this point. What was also weird was that at a restaurant called ‘The Olive Tree’,bread was served with butter and we had to ask 3 times for some olive oil. It’s not in the name as it seems.

The amuse bouche (some potato and leek soup) was –well –some potato and leek soup.

MY DINING ROOM (Fulham)

Category: Bistro (££)

If I don’t have time to look at blogs for restaurant recommendations,I tend to use Time Out for restaurant references. Time Out is about right most of the time and it is rare that I completely disagree with their review, but one of this rare occasions happened last weekend at My Dining Room in Fulham. I went there on Time Out’s recommendation whose reviewer experienced this restaurant as ‘friendly service and halfway house between relaxed pub and fancy restaurant:think gastropub turned chichi.’and awarded 4 out of 5 stars.

THE PERSEVERANCE (Bloomsbury)

Category:Bistro (££)

A not so honorary mention for Perseverance,an independent pub in Bloomsbury, which served me the possibly worst burger I have ever eaten in the UK.

My meal didn’t start off well when I had to wait 25 minutes longer for the food than my 5 lunch companions. When my Cheeseburger (8.50) finally arrived,I wished it rather hadn’t. The meat managed it to be completely overcooked and at the same time have a weird mushy consistency. I think they must have put potatoes or bread in the burger mixture, whatever it was,it tasted foul.

PIZZERIA LA LANTERNA (Bermondsey)

Category: Bistro £)

I am not going to give a good review to any Italian restaurant that serves me overcooked pasta, particularly when I request my pasta to be al dente. So if you don’t mind the state of your pasta you might enjoy Pizzeria La Lanterna. If you are, like me,a pasta snob, stay away.

LE PAIN QUOTIDIEN (Southbank)

Category: Bistro £)

After an amazing classical concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall,my parents and I wanted a quick bite to eat and a nice glass of red wine to go with it. For me it’s always rather difficult to find a decent place to eat around the Southbank Centre. Too many generic chain restaurants and too many tourists queuing in front of them. As it was already quite late we just went into the first restaurant that crossed our ways, that was Le Pain Quotidien. Le Pain Quotidien is a Belgian chain with restaurants with subsidiaries all over the world. I liked the rustic communal tables and the waiters were polite and helpful.

TUKTUK NOODLE BAR (SOHO)

Category: Le Budget )

It’s cheap. That’s about the only positive thing I can say about TukTuk Noodle Bar in Soho. As the name promises it serves all kinds of Asian noodle dishes. I am hardly ever in Central London during the week at lunch time and why oh why did I not just queue at Koya? Well, too late for regrets, just don’t make the same mistake as me and do keep away from this restaurant.

WATERLOO BAR &KITCHEN (Waterloo)WATERLOO BAR &KITCHEN (Waterloo)

Category: Bistro (££)

Waterloo Bar and Kitchen is a very bad restaurant. I am just telling you this so that you not,by chance such as me,stumble in there and waste precious money, time and calories on their hideous food.

VILLAGE EAST (Bermondsey)VILLAGE EAST (Bermondsey)

Category:Brasserie

We were actually trying to go to Zucca but they could not fit us in,so we ended up eating at Village East, a trendy cocktail bar/restaurant roughly opposite Zucca on Bermondsey Street. I like going there for cocktails actually, they do unusual combination with herbs (e.g. thyme, sage) and I love their gingerbread old fashioned. I had never eaten there before so it seemed a good idea to give it a try.

OTTOMAN PALACE (Camden)

Category: Bistro

I don’t want to waste too much of my precious time on this review, but I feel I should be spreading the word:Don’t visit Ottoman Palace in Camden!

We went there because it’s so close to Koko where we saw Bebel Gilberto afterward and we usually like Turkish cuisine but we regretted deeply having chosen this place.

BOB BOB RICARD (Soho)BOB BOB RICARD (Soho)

Category:Brasserie

Food and Wine Blogger dinners are a great opportunity to meet and socialise with other food bloggers and enjoy good value food in interesting restaurants   (thank you Niamh for organising!). This time it took place at Bob Bob Ricards in Soho.

Bob Bob Ricard is a super stylish and decadent,Russian themed restaurant with –very importantly –a pink “champagne emergency button”on each table;the evening was off to a promising start! It indeed commenced very well with the BBR signature cocktail –a delicious rhubarb gin &tonic (7.5). In fact I have to say that all the drinks to come were delightful.
