MELE E PERE (Soho)

Fried Whitebait @ Mele e Pere (Soho)

Category: Bistro (££-£££)

London is in dire need of good neighbourhood Italians.  Unfortunately the newly opened Italian trattoria Mele e Pere in Soho is not going to change that.

My recent lunch at Mele e Pere was largely mediocre.  I chose dishes from the lunch and pre-theatre menu, which with 12.50 for 2 courses is a real bargain.   The a la carte menu is substantially more pricey with antipasti from £.50 to £9.50,paste from £7.50 to £10 and mains between £14 and £24.

MARKET CAFE (Hackney)

I enjoyed Market Cafe,a bar/restaurant on the corner of fashionably edgy Broadway Market in Hackney.  It’s buzzing,it’s low key,it’s reasonably priced and I thought the food was nice.  In parts entire experience seemed a bit improvised and it was overall not faultless –possibly due to the fact that Market Cafe has only opened a couple of months ago.

C+R CAFE (Chinatown)

C+R Cafe is very hard to find, particularly when you use google maps on your smart phone which deviously sends you somewhere about 150 metres away in the middle of a block of house  and when you are terribly hungover at the same time.  After running in circles for a considerable amount of time,I finally found C+R Cafe, tucked away in a tiny alleyway on the Western corner of Chinatown.  I met my equally hungover friend there to indulge in some Malaysian food to soak up all that was left from our heavy partying the night before.

Ute cooks:ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH WITH CARDAMON AND NIGELLA SEEDS (Ottolenghi)

Roasted butternut squash with cardamom and nigella seeds

Butternut squash, the quintessential winter vegetable, is strictly speaking in season only from November to December.  I love it all year around and for me it works in warm comforting winter soups, stews and curries as well as in summary and light salads.

Ute travels:CHARLESTON and a Lowcountry Breakfast at POOGAN’S PORCH

Charleston

My recent travel through the Deep South brought me to the charming Old South town Charleston, the second biggest city of South Carolina.  Charleston is just very pretty.  Surrounded by the Atlantic ocean on three sides,it boasts of historic houses with stunning colonial architecture and century old mansions, separated by cobblestone road, beautiful churches and mature trees decorated by Spanish moss.

The “Holy City”Charleston in Southern Carolina is a rising star as a tourist destination.  It has,for the first time, won the Conde Nast Readers’Choice Award for the best city in the US,pushing funky San Francisco from the top.

That by itself would not pose enough justification for me to visit Charleston, however there is the food…

BISTRO DU VIN (Soho)

Sardines on Toast @Bistro du Vin

Category: Brasserie (£££)

My dinner at Bistro du Vin has been a largely unpleasant experience and the food could be summarised with the two words “Dry”and “Bland“.  On top of this, the service personnel was truly annoying (such as 3 waiters  asking the same question within the space of 2 minutes and fake friendliness that seemed very insincere) and a waiting time of 45 minutes for the starter of the pre-theatre menu.

Bibimbap is not only the famous Korean national dish, but also the name of a small Korean eatery in the midst of Soho.  It is one of the places that, once discovered, you will keep coming back to for your quick, cheap, tasty and filling Korean fix.

Ute cooks:Aromatic and Fragrant PILAF RICE

Pilaf Rice

A few days ago I read this post about how to make Pilaf rice on Hungry and frozen,a New Zealand food blog that I follow.  It sounded so easy and so delicious that I immediately attempted my version of this Persian classic.  I have made it 3 times the last week because I like it so much and in addition it is so quick and straight forward to prepare.   You only need one pot,it makes great use of leftover vegetables and it works by itself as well as a side for chicken or lamb.  Who would have thought that rice can taste that fantastic?

TAMADA (St John’s Wood)

The visit to the small restaurant Tamada in St. John’s Wood was my first encounter with Georgian cuisine.  Georgian,my lunch companion who has visited Georgia on many occasions told me,is one of the most interesting cuisines of all the states formerly comprising the USSR.  It is rich in vegetables and influenced by  Mediterranean,Europe and The Middle East.
