 Australian Tartine @ Poilane
Category: Bistro (££)

The decision to give a very positive review to the all day breakfast/ tartine/French boulangerie place Cuisine de Bar by Poilane just off busy King’s Road is largely based on the fact that I am absolutely in love with their Australian Tartine (?£8.5). Ripe mashed avocado is generously layered onto a slice of deliciously fresh crisp artisan brown bread which has before been spread thinly with vegemite, the Australian version o f marmite. Together with the chilli flakes sprinkled on top, the result is an enticing mixture of salty and hot and creamy and I just absolutely love it. I think it’s the best hangover food ever, as it gives you everything you need to recover from having had one glass too many. Read more... (435 words, 7 images, estimated 1:44 mins reading time)

I am a bad Austrian. After one year and about 130 posts, I have not blogged about a single Austrian restaurant/cafe in London. I have been wanting to go to Bistro Delicat in Battersea forever, but somehow it just never happened. The other noteworthy Austrian etablissement in London is Kipferl. A little cafe just behind the Barbican it has achieved some critical acclaim for its cakes and coffee. Now, while walking through the Antiques Market in Camden Passage last weekend, I stumbled upon a second Kipferl.

What is ‘Kipferl‘ you might wonder, after you probably have unsuccessfully tried to pronounce it. A Kipferl is a very Austrian thing, it is something to eat and it’s all about the crescent shape. Read more... (587 words, 11 images, estimated 2:21 mins reading time)

How often do I end up at Starbucks or Nero because I don’t know where else to go? That’s why I have decided to introduce the coffee shop and tea house category. There is no rating as I won’t mention any bad places (unless they are so bad that I find it necessary to spread the word…) and in most I won’t have eaten anything. It’s just about places where you could imagine hanging out for an afternoon, reading the newspaper or a book, do some people watching or watch the world go by and have some delicious coffee or wonderful tea. After an amazing classical concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall, my parents and I wanted a quick bite to eat and a nice glass of red wine to go with it. For me it’s always rather difficult to find a decent place to eat around the Southbank Centre. Too many generic chain restaurants and too many tourists queuing in front of them. As it was already quite late we just went into the first restaurant that crossed our ways, that was Le Pain Quotidien. Le Pain Quotidien is a Belgian chain with restaurants with subsidiaries all over the world. I liked the rustic communal tables and the waiters were polite and helpful.
