POILANE (Chelsea)

Bodega Negra and North Road 046.JPG

Australian Tartine @ Poilane

Category: Bistro  (££)

The decision to give a very positive review to the all day breakfast/ tartine/French boulangerie place Cuisine de Bar by Poilane just off busy King’s Road is largely based on the fact that I am absolutely in love with their Australian Tartine (?£8.5).  Ripe mashed avocado is generously layered onto a slice of deliciously fresh crisp artisan brown bread which has before been spread thinly with vegemite, the Australian version o f marmite.  Together with the chilli flakes sprinkled on top,the result is an enticing mixture of salty and hot and creamy and I just absolutely love it.  I think it’s the best hangover food ever,as it gives you everything you need to recover from having had one glass too many.

BISTRO BRUNO LOUBET (Clerkenwell)

Hello Fresh and Bistro Bruno 052.JPG

Beetroot Ravioli @ Bistro Bruno Loubet

Category: Brasserie (£££)

Bistro Bruno Loubet is a distinctly French restaurant located in stylish boutique hotel The Zetter in the middle of the Golden Restaurant Triangle that is Clerkenwell/Farringdon (within a short walking distance you also find the excellent restaurants The Modern Pantry,St. John’s Restaurant,Vinoteca, North Road,Fox and Anchor and St. Ali).  The dining room is bright and generous, the waiters as Gaelic as can be (ours looked and talked like taken straight out of a French movie actually) and the food is delicious.

BISTRO DU VIN (Soho)

Eating out and in 051.JPG

Sardines on Toast @Bistro du Vin

Category: Brasserie (£££)

My dinner at Bistro du Vin has been a largely unpleasant experience and the food could be summarised with the two words “Dry”and “Bland“.  On top of this, the service personnel was truly annoying (such as 3 waiters  asking the same question within the space of 2 minutes and fake friendliness that seemed very insincere) and a waiting time of 45 minutes for the starter of the pre-theatre menu.

Ute bakes:TARTE TATIN

Luiz and Tarte Tatin 079.JPG

Tarte Tatin

I always thought making Tarte Tatin, the famous French tarte invented by the Tatin sisters in the late 19th century, would be very difficult.  It is however surprisingly easy and I succeeded in my first attempt making this beautiful caramelly dessert bliss.  I don’t think there is any other dessert with minimal preparation effort that will result in so much happiness of your dinner guests.

I got a lot of guidance from Felicity Cloake’s how to cook perfect tarte tatin and added my own touch.

ALMEIDA (Islington)

Wild Mushroom and Truffle Risotto @Almeida

Category: Brasserie (£££)

Almeida,a French brasserie just opposite the outstanding Almeida Theater, does a very good value pre-theatre menu:2 courses for 16 and 3 courses for 19 pounds.

We went to see The House of Bernarda Alba,a Llorca play with a pure female cast, transferred from catholic Spain to rural Iran.  I liked it a lot, while my boyfriend found it depressing and hated it.  I suggest you believe me and go see it,it’s on until 10th of March.

Ute travels:LA BOITE A HUITRE or Oysters in Bordeaux (France)

Spain 095.JPG

When visiting France’s most famous region for the production of gorgeous red wine,it is worthwhile spending some time in the city that gives this wine its name:Bordeaux. It is the capital of the department Gironde in the region Aquitaine and well over 1 million people live in this beautiful and charming city with a lot of French flair.

LADUREE (Covent Garden)

Category: Cafe (but an expensive one £££)

On a sunny and warm afternoon in the middle of Covent Garden it is usually very difficult to get a table somewhere. Surprisingly not at Laduree, which might have to do with their rather astronomical prices for cakes, ice cream and of course its famous macaroons. Laduree is a French luxury tea room chain which has two more subsidiaries in London, the most famous being at Harrods.

CHABROT Bistro D’Amis (Knightsbridge)

Category: Brasserie (£££)

After having read formidable reviews about Chabrot in the Metro and the blog Cheese &Biscuit this restaurant was top on my list to try, particularly as I am always a bit at loss on where to go in Knightsbridge. I don’t like to be ripped off,you see.

In the end,I was not as taken with Chabrot Marina and Chris. The food was good, but it was by no means exceptional and it didn’t leave any lasting impression. The main criticism I have though,is that I found it rather overpriced. Ok,we are talking Knightsbridge here, but the only fish main on the menu £29?  To be fair, there were cheaper dishes to choose from, but I really wanted fish. £29 I may pay at a Michelin star place with amazing atmosphere and great reputation, not at something that calls itself bistro…(that’s the cheapskate in me,sorry)

The atmosphere was positively remarked on by most reviews I read about this place. I assume most of the reviewers must have sat downstairs which did look nice upon entering. We were however led upstairs to an empty, drafty room and apart from the checked tablecloth,I didn’t feel much of a pleasant French flair I have to say.

Now there is one thing worth mentioning about Chabrot Bistro D’Amis. They do a Plat du Jour,I think from 6-7 pm and also for lunch. We got there at 7:30 and sadly missed it as it is very good value for money. The dish of the day,one glass of wine and a coffee for 17.50,this is such a bargain for Knightsbridge! I do have to come back for this.

Back to the A La Carte menu.

L’ATELIER DES CHEFS –Cooking Class

L’Atelier des Chefs,Cook and Dine (90 min) - 54 pounds

Something seminal happened. I took my second cooking class! And I did this without major disaster (burning myself or others, blood bath, lost extremities…). I felt this was quite an achievement. I have to say that this was actually a present for Stu,so it was not that I actively WANTED to take a cooking class. But it was actually fun (and I learned how to cut ingredients into very small pieces,a hard lesson for someone as impatient as me).

GAUTHIER SOHO (Soho)

Category: Brasserie (£££)

Gauthier Soho is the restaurant where I went to celebrate in style the happy occasion of me  having finally finished my PhD. At the same time,Gauthier Soho probably celebrated that it just got awarded its first Michelin star. Not that it is the owner’s first –Alexis Gauthier has already achieved this award as chef at his former work place Rousillon. But I think, basically,Alexis and me were both happy!
