BRICIOLE (Marylebone)

When I heard about the opening of Briciole I knew I had to try it in my desperate and thus far not successful search for a decent and non pretentious neighbourhood Italian.

CEVICHE (Soho)

Ceviche 008.JPG

Don Ceviche £6.75

Category:Bistro (££+)

I love ceviche but no,I didn’t like Ceviche.  Ceviche,a recently opened Peruvian restaurant in Soho,is the new darling of the London foodie scene, equally loved by food bloggers and food critics.  Peruvian cuisine is predicted to be the new food trend of 2012 (as suggested in Huffington Post and The Telegraph) and apart from Ceviche,2 more Peruvian restaurants are to open in London in the coming months.

I had Peruvian food only at a few occasions and enjoyed it a lot,so I was excited to meet my friend Uyen at Ceviche for a girly lunch.

La Bodega Negra brought to London by the New York restaurateur,“cultural engineer”and nightclub owner Serge Becker is certainly a welcome addition to London’s food and drinks scene and has taken the London foodie world by storm.  We all like places that are relaxed, reasonably priced and serve a mean margarita, right?

My birthday dinner at North Road ,a high end Danish restaurant in Clerkenwell, was fantastic. The Danish chef Christoffer Hruskova (interviewed here) has, since his opening in 2010,achieved a Michelin star with his clean and precise Nordic cooking –very much the flavour of the moment.  Noma in Copenhagen has won the Best Restaurant of the World award for two years running and Jay Rayner describes Hruskova’s cooking to be “about as close as you’ll get to Redzepi’s (Noma’s chef) without buying a plane ticket”.

HAWKSMOOR SPITALFIELD BAR (Spitalsfield)

Hawksmoor Bar

Category: Bistro (and Bar) (££)

The carnivorous Hawksmoor family consisting of 3 steak-centred and critically highly acclaimed restaurants (Spitalfields,Guildhall and Seven Dials) has got an offspring.   The Spitalfield Bar in the basement of Hawksmoor Spitalfields is a worthy member and highly recommended for an (almost) budget Hawksmoor experience.  The bar is dark and cosy, pleasantly small and manages a perfect balance between chic and edgy.  The waiters, all male at our visit, were handsome and tattooed, and posed a striking contrast to the dark wood and shiny brass walls.

MELE E PERE (Soho)

Fried Whitebait @ Mele e Pere (Soho)

Category: Bistro (££-£££)

London is in dire need of good neighbourhood Italians.  Unfortunately the newly opened Italian trattoria Mele e Pere in Soho is not going to change that.

My recent lunch at Mele e Pere was largely mediocre.  I chose dishes from the lunch and pre-theatre menu, which with 12.50 for 2 courses is a real bargain.   The a la carte menu is substantially more pricey with antipasti from £.50 to £9.50,paste from £7.50 to £10 and mains between £14 and £24.

MARKET CAFE (Hackney)

Category: Bistro (££)

I enjoyed Market Cafe,a bar/restaurant on the corner of fashionably edgy Broadway Market in Hackney.  It’s buzzing,it’s low key,it’s reasonably priced and I thought the food was nice.  In parts entire experience seemed a bit improvised and it was overall not faultless –possibly due to the fact that Market Cafe has only opened a couple of months ago.

C+R CAFE (Chinatown)

Malaysian Style Nasi Goreng (6.50)

 Category: Le Budget (£)

C+R Cafe is very hard to find, particularly when you use google maps on your smart phone which deviously sends you somewhere about 150 metres away in the middle of a block of house  and when you are terribly hungover at the same time.  After running in circles for a considerable amount of time,I finally found C+R Cafe, tucked away in a tiny alleyway on the Western corner of Chinatown.  I met my equally hungover friend there to indulge in some Malaysian food to soak up all that was left from our heavy partying the night before.

BISTRO DU VIN (Soho)

Eating out and in 051.JPG

Sardines on Toast @Bistro du Vin

Category: Brasserie (£££)

My dinner at Bistro du Vin has been a largely unpleasant experience and the food could be summarised with the two words “Dry”and “Bland“.  On top of this, the service personnel was truly annoying (such as 3 waiters  asking the same question within the space of 2 minutes and fake friendliness that seemed very insincere) and a waiting time of 45 minutes for the starter of the pre-theatre menu.
